DIY Pottery Bird Bottle

10:00 AM to 1:00 PM

This event has ended.

Created by

Jade for the club Georgia Outdoor Club.

Join local potter Karmen James to craft your own historically accurate bird bottle. This lovely piece was used historically to assist with insect control. Bottles were mounted on a building to encourage the nesting of birds that would then consume irritating bugs. Fun and practical! Ages 18+, Must pre-register by July 25th.

In the 18th century, a bird bottle was an easy to craft birdhouse used to help control the bug population. You didn’t need to be a woodworker, you didn’t need nails or glue, just clay to craft a nesting spot for birds. Especially good for areas that didn’t offer many nesting trees.
Karmen James is a local potter who will show you how to craft and paint your own, historically accurate, beautiful bottle. Call the office to pre-register and pre-pay. You MUST pre-register by July 25th to take part in this two-day program. Only ages 18+.
The program is split up into two days to allow the clay time to dry before painting, and then it will need to be fired before you can take it home. If you cannot attend both days, Karmen will apply a simple glaze to your bottle. Your bottle will be ready for pickup on Thursday, August 19th. For an additional $10, Vann House staff will mail you your bottle if you are unable to pick it up at the site.
